The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) has enjoyed a long and rich tradition of engaging in international exchange and cooperation, and has undergone three stages of development which may be described as “steady development, rapid promotion, and quality improvement”. After what is known as China’s “reform and opening-up” period, our university signed a cooperative agreement in 1979 with RWTH Aachen University in Germany, being one of the earliest such partnership agreements to be signed between a Chinese and international university at that time. Since then, following the trend of China’s opening-up to the world, USTB pursued greater international cooperation with much excitement. In 2006 we began to vigorously promote the training of international talents, and in 2008 the university’s Tenth Party Congress identified a strategy of “internationalization” as being a top priority for development. In 2009 the university held a meeting to determine a plan for carrying out this strategy, and in 2012 the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” established the goal of “internationalization” as being one of the three pillars of USTB’s future development. In 2015, the university’s Eleventh Party Congress determined 2020 to be the target year when our university would develop into a “high-level multidisciplinary research university with its own outstanding characteristics, being renowned both domestically and internationally, and being an overall leader in engineering disciplines, especially metallurgy and materials”. In 2016, to respond to the nation’s development goals and international initiatives including the “Belt and Road Initiative”, we began to reshape our own management goals in order to improve the overall quality and efficient of our office’s work.
Under the guidance of university leadership, USTB has made great strides in expanding its international activities. We have sought to build global ties, and at present have signed partnerships with over 220 overseas universities, enterprises, and research labs, making special efforts to cultivate relationships with high-level institutions, such as establishing a joint research lab with Tata Steel and a Confucius Institute with De Montfort University in the UK. We have also instituted programs for building international cooperative bases, and have successfully established 6 such innovation platforms under the national “111 Plan”. Every year over 1150 foreign experts and scholars are invited to give lectures and carry out cooperative research projects at USTB, while near 1000 students are sent overseas to study. Furthermore, in order to meet the expectations of our university’s “first-class discipline” construction goals, USTB has strove to improve the management of its international cooperative ventures, enhance the training level of its international talents, increase its societal contributions, become a global leader in regards to the quality of its research output, and support the overall development of its internationalization strategy.
At USTB we believe that the global integration of the nation is inseparable from its pursuit of cooperation and exchange in higher education. Since the establishment of our university we have adhered to the motto of “seeking truth and innovation”, and have made the embrace of overseas guests and partners a central aspect of our development plan. With an open mind we will continue working together with our partners to improve our education efforts and research ventures, all while making progress towards being recognized domestically and internationally as a renowned research university. Today, USTB’s growth is inseparable from its pursuit of internationalization. Let us come together to work towards greater collaborative efforts, promote USTB’s international competitiveness, and ensure the long-term stability and development of our university!
