Release Time: 2019-12-13Views:
On November 13th, USTB alumnus LIU Jie, alternate member of the 15th and 16th CPC Central Committee, deputy to the 9th and 10th National People’s Congress (NPC), member of 11th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), former vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology, vice president of the Chinese Society for Metals, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was invited to deliver a seminar on Into the World of Metallurgical Automation . About 150 university faculty members and students attended the seminar.
In his address on Into the World of Metallurgical Automation , Academician LIU discussed the past and future of metallurgical automation technology. Returning to his alma mater reminded him of the friendship he had shared with his teacher Prof. SUN Yikang, the first chair of the Department of Automation, USTB. He spoke of how since its founding, the University of Science and Technology Beijing (formerly the Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology) has shared in the challenges and successes of the country, and has made tremendous contributions to the development of the metallurgical industry. In the field of metallurgical automation, researchers represented by Prof. SUN Yikang were on the cutting-edge of global technology and yielded many fruitful scientific outcomes through their innovative and hard work. The steel rolling automation team led by Prof. SUN and researchers from partner enterprises designed a two-step strategy according to the needs of their time. In the first step, they introduced a hardware system from abroad and independently developed their own software, and saw success in the new computer-controlled system for the 1700mm hot-rolling mill at the Wuhan Iron and Steel Company (WISC). In the second step, they integrated the hardware system with the independently developed software, and the production technique of Angang’s 1700mm Medium Thickness Slab Continuous Cast-rolling. These two technological breakthroughs saved money for Chinese industries, and brought about significant progress in the research of steel rolling automation. Thanks to this, China turned itself from the follower of computer-controlled steel rolling technology developers to a trendsetter. Moreover, these two technological advances were of great socioeconomic interest and were awarded several National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology.
Academician LIU emphasized that in the future, metallurgical automation technology will further integrate with information, automation and AI technologies. For a detailed explanation, he introduced the new model of steel industry development, “steel industry+ AI”, discussing the basic structure of steel industry informatization and upgrading, application of AI, integration of long-distance management control, intelligent decision support systems for steel production, highly automated production and unmanned control, and the collection of industry data. He encouraged students and teachers to concentrate on the study and research of their own major, making a greater contribution to the nation’s “steel power”. Following the report, teachers and students had a discussion with Academician LIU on various issues related to his speech.
