USTB Students Achieve Great Success at the 13th iCAN Competition

From November 15-17, the 13th International Contest of innovAtioN (iCAN) competition was held at the Jiangning Campus of Hehai University. This year’s contest attracted more than 600 universities around China to take part, and was divided into 18 subdivisions from which 554 teams were selected to compete in the finals. After fierce competition, 8 teams from USTB’s Schools of Computer and Communication Engineering, Automation and Electrical Engineering, and the Donlinks School of Economics and Management won 1 outstanding prize, 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes altogether, making 2019 the best result for USTB at the iCAN Competition. Additionally, YANG Jian from the School of Computer and Communication Engineering was recognized as the “2019 iCAN Education Star”, and USTB was awarded the “Outstanding Organizational Unit award.”
The CalmSpoon project from the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering won the outstanding award, rating it in the top 5 projects in China and making it eligible to take part in the 2020 International iCAN Competition along with other 4 teams representing China.
The iCAN competition is an annual contest jointly established by the international iCAN association, the Ministry of Education’s sub-committee for Guidance on Innovative Teaching Methods and the Chinese International NEMS Society. The iCAN competition, dating from 2007, focuses on entrepreneurship and innovation in science and technology, and seeks to promote new thinking among students. Participants are encouraged to work with cutting-edge ideas and technologies in such fields as the Internet of Things and AI hardware, making the iCAN Competition serve as a platform for greater technological innovation among university students.
USTB has participated in the Beijing division of the iCAN competition for 8 years, and has participated in organizational work for the contest in Beijing since 2012. In the past 3 years, USTB has produced many excellent student teams; in total they have won 2 outstanding prizes, 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes, and 10 third prizes. Their projects were in fields such as intelligent transportation systems, smart communities, intelligent education, etc.
