On May 20th, a symposium hosted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for the purpose of studying and implementing the spirit of President XI Jinping's reply to Pakistani students studying at USTB was held. Mr. TIAN Xuejun, Vice Minister of Education, Member of the CPC Leading Group of the MOE, chaired the meeting. The heads of Department of Moral Education as well as the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges (Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs) under the MOE, and leaders from Peking University, Tsinghua University, USTB and other universities in Beijing attended the symposium.
The symposium stressed that President XI's reply showed high regard and support for international students studying in China, sentiments which would function as the guiding principles for promoting study abroad work across the nation. The people should work to understand the spirit of the President’s reply, adhere to people-centered principles by providing substantial and meticulous support to international students, and prepare for a normalization of daily life following the coronavirus pandemic. XI's reply encouraged all to raise awareness of their work, improve overall leadership, and work to serve international students studying in China so as to accelerate the opening up of national education.
Mr. WU Guilong, Chancellor of USTB, and Prof. YANG Renshu, President of USTB, attended the symposium. Mr. WU spoke of how USTB planned to study and implement the spirit of President XI's reply. In a short period, USTB had already set about propagating and studying the spirit of President XI's reply within the university community. From a symposium with international students studying in USTB to meetings held among the Standing Party Committee, as well as convening meetings among teachers and students, the whole of USTB had devoted itself to the chief political task of studying XI’s letter.
USTB fully understood that President XI's reply was of practical significance in working to build a community for the shared future of mankind in the process of fighting the pandemic, continued Mr. WU. On the one hand, USTB would continue to guard against a resurgence of COVID-19. On the other hand, the university would continue to offer advanced services and education for teachers and students both at home and abroad, thereby promoting the practice of creating a global community. The reply also offered significant guidelines for promoting international students programs and the internationalization of education. Based on the principle of mutual learning, university leaders should embrace reform, improve the building of their university’s brand, enhance the quality of scholarly exchanges, and strengthen cooperation with universities along the “Belt and Road”. He promised that they would work to build USTB into a top-tier education and research center for materials and metallurgical disciplines.
President XI’s reply was of historical significance to USTB, encouraging the university to promote political education and talent training in its construction of “double first class” disciplines. USTB will make every effort to implement the President’s guidelines on education and implement comprehensive reforms. The spirit of XI's reply will take root in the governance of USTB and inspire us to steadily improve the ability to serve national, regional and industrial development.
