The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact around the world. In light of the threat, USTB has taken action out of deep concern for the Chinese personnel working at the USTB-De Montford University (DMU) Confucius Institute (CI) in Leicester, UK, giving high priority to the safety and health of all the teachers and students there in order to support the CI in epidemic prevention efforts.
Maintaining communication to keep track of teachers and students
Given that the UK has been severely affected by the pandemic, the USTB Office of International Affairs (OIA) has communicated with Dr. YANG Yingjun, director of the CI, in order to keep track of the Chinese personnel working there. Currently the 18 Chinese teachers, volunteers and family members living in Leicester are in good physical and mental health. In light of their good health and circumstances, they have decided not to return to China for the present. The OIA cares for the mental health and personal needs of its people while facing the epidemic, and has taken measures including sending notices from the Chinese Embassy to the UK, sharing China’s experience in epidemic prevention and the progress of its efforts at USTB.
Sending out protective gear to fulfill demands
In case of a materials shortage, the OIA purchased and mailed out protective materials to the CI. On March 24th, two batches of surgical masks, N95 respirators, disposable gloves, ear thermometers and other protective gear were sent to the CI.
Delivering a message of support to De Montfort University
On March 20th, Prof. YANG Renshu, President of USTB, sent a letter of solidarity and support on behalf of USTB to the President of DMU, expressing deep concern for the health of those working there. He gave an assurance that USTB was keen to help DMU during the pandemic period, and also extended his gratitude for its continued support of the CI. Though we are oceans apart, our hearts are connected. USTB is ready to join hands with the teachers and students at DMU to face the current difficulties.
