USTB and Baosteel Establish “Baosteel—USTB Joint Institute for Advanced Metallic Materials”

On January 7, 2020, Mr. WU Guilong, Chancellor of USTB, Prof. HE Minqing and Prof. ZANG Yong, Vice Presidents of USTB, and Prof. XIE Jianxin and Prof. MAO Xinping, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, visited the Baosteel Group (Baosteel) to sign an agreement for the establishment of the “Baosteel—USTB Joint Institute for Advanced Metallic Materials” (Joint Institute).
The USTB delegation was met by Mr. CHEN Derong, Chairman of China Baowu Steel Group Corporation Limited and USTB alumnus, Mr. ZOU Jixin, Chairman of Baosteel, and Mr. CHU Shuangjie, President of Baosteel. Mr. CHEN Deronggave a brief presentation on his company’s work, business model, and production capabilities. He expressed his hope that Baosteel and USTB would work together to help make Baosteel a global leader in the steel industry. Mr. WU Guilong spoke of how USTB’s collaboration with Baosteel was an important aspect of its contribution in the steel industry, and based on their successful mutual history USTB would work hard to utilize its strengths to further promote enterprise-university collaboration efforts.
In the afternoon, members from both sides attended a ceremony for the signing of the agreement establishing the “Baosteel—USTB Joint Institute for Advanced Metallic Materials”.
At the ceremony, Mr. ZOU Jixin welcomed the USTB delegation and thanked them for USTB’s support of Baosteel. He affirmed that Baosteel would in return contribute to the development of the new Joint Institute and its research, while at the same time working to further strengthen relations with USTB and promote innovation in the steel industry.
On behalf of USTB, Mr. WU Guilong thanked Baosteel for it’s support of the university and contributions to personnel training efforts. He then outlined USTB’s recent work in promoting the steel industry, mentioning the joint agreement between USTB and Baosteel signed in October, 2019, which began a new era of enterprise-university cooperative work. He concluded by expressing his hope that through the new Joint Institute, USTB and Baosteel would continue to strengthen ties between enterprises and universities, and fully pursue new and innovative work together.
Afterwards, Mr. CHU Shuangjie and Prof. ZANG Yong signed the cooperative agreement on behalf of their respective institutions. According to the agreement, the Joint Institute will carry out scientific research and personnel training with the goal of taking leadership in the steel production industry, meet the needs of Baosteel’s development, and work to advance national economic development. The president of the Joint Institute is Academician MAO, leading research teams from both USTB and Baosteel. Subsidiary to the Joint Institute will be the Center for Advanced Metallic Materials, the Center for Advanced Processing Technology, the Center for Near Net-shape Production, the Center for Green Manufacturing, the Center for Intelligent Manufacturing and the Personnel Training Center.
