The 48th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2021 has been reviewed online from March 18th to 25th. The team project “Using smartphones and surveillance cameras for nuclear radiation detection” under Dr. WEI Qingyang, associate professor of the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering at USTB, won the Gold Award of the exhibition. This was the first time that USTB had won the award.
The project uses the CMOS sensors of mobile phones and surveillance cameras to directly measure nuclear radiation. It has the advantages of low cost and wide coverage. It is convenient for the public to detect radiation doses in the surrounding environment and protects public safety, especially for workers who may be in a radiation environment. Significantly, it can be applied for nuclear radiation monitoring in important places such as customs to ensure national security. The project has a bright promotion prospect in the field of intelligent nuclear radiation detection. It has obtained national invention patent authorizations and software copyrights. The related patents also won the Silver Award and Innovation Award of the China Association of Invention in 2019 and won Gold Award and Outstanding Innovation Award of IBIX 2020.
